Dining Set Transformation- Part Four- Before/After

OK, Here it is- in the day time.
In natural light.
My new love...

And here are everybody's favorite- Before and Afters-

Please excuse the mess in the Befores and the dirty chalkboard in the Afters

Ha, ha- this one reminds me of the 'Find the differences in these two photos' from Highlights.

What started out as a wonderful, free from a friend, blonde wood dining set with green seat pads evolved to a banquette, with red/khaki stripped seats (and a little girl on top!) at the old house

to creamy Valspar Churchill Hotel White spray painted, then lightly distressed chairs with retro lemon and yellow fabric pads; a hand painted Valspar Lake Country blue table with Dark Walnut stain rubbed legs and a Dark Walnut top.

All that remains is the light wood Ikea bench on the other side of the table.
Everyone seems to agree- it needs to be the creamy Valspar Churchill Hotel White color for now with a fun retro lemon fabric pad when the girls are a little older.
I'm loving the transformation.
What do you think?

Dining Set Transformation-Part Three-so, so close!

After sanding, sanding, more sanding, applying stripper (twice!), more sanding,
then staining, staining, more staining,
6 coats of polyurethane and a day and a half of waiting....

the table top came in tonight when Breadwinner got home and we assembled the table.
(*random side note: even though it's not terribly clean, do you love my giant chalkboard?)

In other words....

it's done.
I was so excited I had to take pictures- even though it's night, and I haven't learned how to use my new, incredibly amazing flash Breadwinner got me for Christmas.
Bear with the poor lighting in these pictures....and the mess in the background...

OK- not done- because there is the problem of this little Ikea bench on the other side of the table.
What do I DO with it? We want to leave it free of fabric for now.
The kids sit there for meals and it makes for easier clean up.
Would you take it apart, strip it, and stain it to match the walnut top?
Or rough it up a bit and go with the same creamy white of the chairs?
Or the awesome blue of the table legs?
Help! Help!
I'm soooo close to finishing this transformation. What should I do?

If you are new to What I Wore Wednesday, here is a quick refresher...
Lindsey at the Pleated Poppy started her What I Wore Wednesday posts several months ago in an effort to change her habits of hanging out in pjs and softie pants all day. Just because she stays home to work and home school her kids, doesn't mean she can't be cute (seriously-she is too stinking cute, even IN her softies!). Since she started her WIWW link ups, over 100 women are putting themselves out there in blogland each week in an effort to share, inspire, and just be's my Week 17.

Glittery Valentine Wreath

We've all seen tutorial upon tutorial for the hanger/ornament wreaths.
I thought I'd take a stab this year with a twist.
With tons of 75-90% off shatterproof ornaments, beaded/twig garland, and tiny beaded sprays, I went to work creating a heart shaped Valentine wreath.

After adding the ornament to my bent hanger, I wound a red holly berry garland around and between the ornaments, then finished off with a few pearly picks/sprays in the gaps.

I think I'm in love. Just in time for Valentine's Day! (wink)

Dining Set Transformation-Part Two

It's killing me-I'm so in love with my table and chairs and it's not even finished yet!

When the paint dried on the legs, I grabbed my favorite tub of dark walnut stain and applied it all over, especially in the spindles, let it set for a few minutes, then wiped it off.

The color and texture is amazing!
I couldn't wait to see what it looked like next to the newly finished chairs so I brought two legs in and laid them on the edge of our make shift dining table (aka-the camping table with a white table cloth thrown over top)

Do you love it with the chairs?
The table top is currently in the garage getting the last few coats of stain.
I'm loving the richness of the color when I first put the stain on, but it lightens so much when I wipe it off.

The top needs work....but the legs-

I can't stand it! So much better.
So fabulous.
Do you agree?

Sale, Sale, Sale

OK- for those of you who read my WIWW posts, you know a good chunk of my wardrobe comes from American Eagle Outfitters.
What you may not know is that 95% off it is on mega sale or clearance (usually plus a coupon on top) when it finds its way into my closet.
I just got an email saying all their clearance is and ADDITIONAL 50% OFF THIS WEEKEND!
Yes, I know- it needed all caps.
So quite reading and go see what you can find!
Go on- at 50% off clearance, I'm pretty sure a few new pieces will find their way to my house.
Oh- and did you know their jewelry is almost always buy one get one half off- this almost always includes clearance. Mega, mega deals to be had.

Dining Set Transformation-Part One

OK- so technically this is part 2.
If you recall, back in October I decided to start refinishing my dining room chairs.

I did one, and then stopped.
As temperatures here in the Southern California high desert continued to rise last week- I was watching the weather station (thank you Breadwinner) like a hawk- bracing for the 65 degree mark.
Saturday we hit it...with no wind-so I grabbed 2 more of the dining room chairs and sanded, primed, painted and lightly distressed them. Thank you Valspar spray paint!
And to think-it only took 3 months to finish up this little refinishing project. I know- don't judge....
Today, the outside temp was almost 80...again (what season is this, anyway?!) with no wind-quite unusual for the desert-so I took advantage and finished the last of the 4 chairs.
You'll have to wait on those pics- but 2 look like the one above, and two have this fabulous retro lemon fabric from my laundry room curtains on the seats.

This is where the new part begins....
Have you seen the Pleated Poppy's coffee table?

When I saw it about a year ago in her rearranging post I fell in LOVE and knew I wanted to use it as my inspiration for our dining room table.
Long about 3pm as the girls were still snoozing away on their naps, I decided to start the dining table part of this transformation. I know, I know-who starts refinishing a dining room table only a few short hours before dinner time?! That would be THIS crazy gal.
The table is fairly large and quite heavy, and wouldn't quite fit through the back door upright, but I was determined....
So- I tipped the bad boy on it's side, carefully slid it across the faux-ish wood floor, lifted it up over the slider door track one end at a time and tipped it back up on it's feet....only a tiny corner was 'pre-sanded' with the help of the concrete porch out the back door.
Next, I grabbed 2 panels of wood from the garage and inched the table onto them to help move it further into the yard.
We live on 2 1/2 acres of horse property and the entire backyard is dirt...which is kind of wet right now...and mud and sanding don't mix.
After sanding the bottom half of the table, I used the two half full cans of primer I had on hand (with a potty training 2 yr old there was no way I was making the trek into town to get more!) and carefully covered each spindley leg with a perfect coat-using every last drop of what was available.

An hour or so later, I returned to brush on the first coat of paint.

Lake Country from Valspar-the perfect match to my favorite Natural Life dish towel (I promise to post a pic in the next update).

By the time the day was over I had one full coat and half the second complete!

Tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same weather- here's hoping for more nap time refinishing!
